White Hut, friends and colleagues honor the late Andy Yee on birthday weekend with 60-cent hot dogs, fountain drinks

WEST SPRINGFIELD — The White Hut will celebrate the life of Andy Yee later this week by offering 60-cent hot dogs and fountain drinks.

The restaurateur would have turned 60 this weekend. He died May 27 in Springfield after a recurrence of cancer. His funeral is Thursday at St. Theresa’s Church in South Hadley.

Yee and his partners — his family-run Bean Restaurant Group, businessman Peter Picknelly and others — stepped in last year to reopen the White Hut when it closed abruptly after more than 80 years in business.

Nathan’s Famous is bringing back 5-cent hot dogs to Coney Island just in time for its reopening. 

A sign at the flagship store reads: “THROWBACK THURSDAYS. 5¢ HOT DOG. ORIGINAL 1916 PRICE WITH PURCHASE OF ANY REGULARLY-PRICED FOOD ITEM! 5PM—CLOSE,” according to Eater.

The Throwback Thursday special is the first time the nickel promotion has been brought back on a regular basis.

The brand’s delivery-only service prepares meals for brands like Cheesecake Factory, Cinnabon, Slush Puppie, and Quiznos. Founder of Ghost Kitchen, George Kottas, explained the concept to Toronto Star saying that the firm “acquire[s] the rights to all these international brands and put them under one kitchen.” Contrary to what we might expect, this unique delivery model didn’t evolve as a result of the pandemic and shelter in place orders, but Kottas says that “[the pandemic] did expedite food trends like mobile ordering and delivery.
