‘Recipe for Disaster’: Ralph’s mother makes her famous tiramisu

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Some recipes are so simple to recreate that it’s almost impossible for anyone to mess it up.

That sounds like a challenge I’m willing to accept.

If you’re not too familiar with Ralph’s Sport Bar at 1571 Richmond Road in Dongan Hills, that’s probably because they only recently opened during the pandemic — an extremely difficult time for any business to thrive.

But the reason they were able to weather the storm was because of fantastic recipes — some are inspired by owner Ralph Tafuri’s mother, affectionally known as “Nonna Rita.”

Once of those signature dishes is Nonna’s famous tiramisu, a mouth-watering dessert flavored with mascarpone cheese, Grand Marnier liqueur, chocolate and espresso.

On paper, the recipe doesn’t appear to be too complicated. Nonna Rita even taught it to her grandchildren, who help her make it.

But after I put my version together, something was missing. What else is new?

Tell me what you think I did wrong on the latest episode of “Recipe For Disaster,” the show where we take your family recipes and local Staten Island dishes and drinks, then try to recreate them in my kitchen.

Hence, “disaster.”

New episodes of “Recipe For Disaster” post every other week. Here’s how to check them out:
