A new coffee shop has recently opened on Harsens Island.
Island Grind, a new specialty coffee shop serving coffee, pastries and light fare, is owned by Harsens Island residents Patty and Harold Bain. It opened for business on April 1.
Patty Bain said she and her husband both have worked in health care. She retired a year ago, while Harold Bain is still working.
“We met on the island, married and raised our daughter Kathryn here surrounded by many family members,” she said.
She said the couple decided to open the shop because many businesses have closed on the island in recent years.
“Some of our staples like San Souci Bar, Weaver’s Market, Middle Channel Country Club and The Landing restaurant,” she said. “Once the old hardware (building) became available, we couldn’t just see another empty storefront in town, so fall of 2019, we purchased the building and decided the island needed a coffee shop.”
Patty Bain said they purchased an espresso machine and family trained in Florida while on vacation.
The café serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, as well as specialty drinks.
“The Island Latte — espresso, frothed milk and vanilla — and the River Delta — espresso, frothed milk, vanilla and caramel sauce — seem to be the favorite drinks,” Patty Bain said.
The café also carries bagels, donuts, scones, generous slices of quiche and muffins. There is also an ice machine on order for cold coffee drinks for the summer.
“I knew the islanders would support a new business (because) that’s ‘just what we do here,’ but the outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming,” Patty Bain said. “My coworker Pam and I meet the friendliest people every day who share their island stories with us. The ‘vibe’ in the shop is exactly what we had hoped for.”
Island Grind is located at 3062 S. Channel Drive on Harsens Island. For more information, visit facebook.com/harsensislandgrind.
