Donnie and Mark Wahlberg confirm death of their mother, Alma, at 78

BOSTON – Alma Wahlberg, the matriarch of the Wahlberg family, has died, according to her sons Donnie and Mark.

Alma Wahlberg, 78, was a mother of nine and a Boston native. She  starred on the reality television series “Wahlburgers” with her sons Donnie, Mark and Paul, the Hingham chef behind the Wahlburgers restaurant chain. She is the inspiration and namesake behind the popular Hingham restaurant Alma Nove run by Paul Wahlberg.

Donnie Wahlberg confirmed his mother’s death in an Instagram post, while Mark Wahlberg took to Twitter to share the news.

“I’m so blessed to have been brought into this world by, raised by, taught by and set on my life’s path by, such an amazing woman,” Donnie Wahlberg wrote. “My mom Alma’s joy for life, love and people – combined with a pride in her humble beginnings and refusal to forget where she came from – undoubtedly shaped me into the man that I am.

“It’s time to rest peacefully, mom,” he added. “I love you, miss you, thank you and will celebrate you, today and always. Forever – your Baby Donnie.”

“My angel, rest in peace,” Mark Wahlberg wrote while posting a photo of his mother.

Alma Wahlberg became a fan favorite and a household name when “Wahlburgers” premiered on A&E in 2014. The show was less about the burgers and more about the brothers.

They bickered, bantered and competed for Mom’s attention. Eventually, they hugged and made up in some half-baked, made-for-TV moments. People loved the playful pranks and nostalgic memories of the family’s humble beginnings in Dorchester, where dinner was always served at 5 sharp.
