Since 1979, the Borenstein family has been bringing metro Phoenix diners a taste of the Big Apple at their chain of New York-inspired restaurants and delis called Chompie’s. Now the family-owned business is expanding with a new location expected to open this summer.
Chompie’s Deli, Bakery and Restaurant is set to open its doors at 3212 E. Cactus Road in Phoenix, about a mile from the Borenstein family’s original restaurant Chompie’s Bagel Factory.
The concept will include a market, bakery, coffee bar and full-service restaurant. It’s being brought to life with help from JRI Hospitality, which became an investment partner in the company in 2019.
Chompie’s currently operates five locations throughout the Valley and is known for its menu featuring dishes like matzo ball soup, pastrami and Reuben sandwiches. The company also operates a wholesale bakery, which distributes the family’s boiled-then-baked bagels to restaurants and grocery stores around the Valley.
“We all are extremely excited to bring Chompie’s back to its old stomping grounds and to be a part of the revitalization of the area,” Mark Borenstein, co-founder and owner, said in a press release.
What to expect at the new Chompie’s restaurant
The new location will replace the Chompie’s restaurant currently located at Paradise Valley Mall.
That restaurant will be the last remaining tenant of the center, according to a press release, and will close its doors after May 17. Customers will be able to enter the restaurant via a separate entrance from the exterior of the mall until its closure.
When the new 27,000-square-foot restaurant opens it will “bring diners back to the Big Apple not only through the restaurant’s East Coast traditional deli-style offerings but also via surroundings that summon the energy and ambiance of the city that never sleeps,” according to the news release.
The space, which is being designed by Sargenti Architects in collaboration with Sixty First Place Architects, will include a “New York-style market” where customers can buy bagels, breads and pastries as well as merchandise. An on-site coffee roastery will allow the company to roast its own beans for its full line of coffee, cold brew, specialty espresso drinks and frozen coffee drinks.
The location will also house a full-service restaurant with an indoor-outdoor bar, large dining with murals of New York City, private dining rooms and a patio.
An anticipated opening date for the new location has not yet been announced. For more information about all Chompie’s locations, visit www.chompies.com.
